I can’t stress how important facts are – facts derived from vigorous research, and the ability to replicate that research. People can believe what they want to “believe” but the natural world works on science and if we don’t understand it we can not adapt or make rational decisions. Too often our policy makers legislate ideology disregarding practical reality. Abortion is a prime example. Make abortions illegal all you want but people will still need them for a myriad of reasons. Abortions aren’t going away no matter how hard we wish them to so we need to legislate that if education is still not enough then safe medical care is not outlawed.

The environment is another area where science has to be the go to metric. Sea levels are rising and pollution is bad for our health. Once we get beyond the climate cover up by the polluting industries we can address and implement the changes necessary to preserve our billion dollar coastal economies. People come to the shore because the air is clean and you can swim in the water. If you change that our economy declines. Implementing a carbon tax will preserve jobs. Promoting roof top solar will create a multi generational boom in job creation. Moving away from a profit driven healthcare system will lower health care costs and increase productivity.

These are well established facts but money in politics has crippled our ability to govern practically for the macro-economy (another well established fact). We need true patriots willing to be brave and stand up and do the morally correct thing for the Country.

Condoms save money: “Publicly funded family planning services saved the government a total of $10.5 billion in 2010 and prevented 760,000 abortions, according to a new study released on Tuesday. The report, conducted by the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive health think tank, found that every dollar the government spent to fund contraceptive services in 2010 saved taxpayers $5.68. A total of 8.9 million women received publicly supported contraceptive services that year through either the Title X federal family planning program or through Medicaid assistance, and 1.1 million unplanned births were prevented.

On a planet with limited resources that is good news – remember god (whatever you conceive that to be) gave us free will and the power to think.  Blindly giving birth because it is something viewed as sacred by some is not what the creator (whatever you conceive it to be or not) had in store for us or we wouldn’t have the power to think.  I think therefore I am.  However why the reason the end result is that we have free will and the power to think.  Blindly going through the motions and not assessing the situation or our surroundings is most likely the blasphemy and its certainly not thinking.

So here’s the News Flash:  You do not have to have an abortion if you don’t want one. If you need one or want one a safe one is available. The theocracy branch of the republican party wants to change that.

News Flash Part Two:  There will always be a demand for abortions for a variety of reasons. Including the fact that there are over 9 billion people on a planet with limited resources.

So the question is do we want our wives and daughters to have access to safe abortions or not?

The theocracy branch of the republican party and those that pay lip service to them do not want our wives and daughters to have safe access to abortions thus punishing their wives and daughters for getting pregnant which is something a billion years worth of evolution has designed them to do.

In addition to that the theocracy side of the republican party and those that pay them lip service do not want to educate our wives and daughters about safe ways of preventing pregnancy even though they are vehemently and fanatically obsessed and opposed to abortion.

Not thinking is the blasphemy.

In my opinion religion came about and evolved as the first “government” a way to codify behavior so we could all be neighbors peacefully and in good health.  Can’t have the serfs or dictators defecating in the well water so lets make it an evil abomination to do so and cast aspersions on those that would unwittingly or knowingly do it and “cast them out” (of town).  That’s the good stuff I’m all for it as a grasp to living sustainably and peacefully side by side.  Not burning people at the stake or feeding them to the lions but getting them to abide by the rules necessary for our collective survival and prosperity.  (i.e., not hiding your taxes in offshore accounts)

Also codifying rules and regulations as a religion cemented and consolidated power by the clerics, shamans, soothsayers, wealthy and leaders charismatic or otherwise of the day giving them an assumed authority that mankind being all too human more often than not does not know how to handle.  That’s the bad stuff abuse of power entrusted to them by the masses.

Hindsight being what it is 20/20 there are some bizarre “rules and regulations” in those old religious books of laws and no one if they take the time to learn what is actually in the bible or other religious text and realizing how many times they have been translated, watered down, altered and edited from the original should take them literally.

As an example Leviticus in the bible gets into the minutia of not planting two different crops in one field or wearing two different types of garments made with different threads and those are not just isolated incidents.  Who knows why that was important to the groups survival or economic system back when it was written. I also know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean.  Clearly someone was concerned with the spread of disease and rightly so.  Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight.  Now that’s just mean.

We don’t need old, ancient religions, their books, their buildings, or their trappings of costumes, hats, ceremonies, and certainly their power struggles, wars, bloodshed and manipulations of populations with misguided rules and regulations from an ancient time, written when circumstances were different.  They are like an outdated map often leading us down the wrong roads.

At the end of the day we have all been given consciousness and a conscience.  It’s there that the difference between right and wrong originally resided before anyone tried writing anything down and before the skill of writing had even evolved.

Before anyone could write the first words there had to be a conscious realization of those words.  The truth, what is right and what is wrong still resides there in its original spot within our minds and being.  You do not need a religion, a building, a costume, a ceremony to access it just be still, pause, think, contemplate, take a walk and trust yourself.  How would you like to be treated that’s the way to treat others simple, and eternal.

Truth resides, survives and thrives no matter how long we try to suppress it, ignore it or deny it and truth eventually comes to fruition for the individual and society. If our global leaders would just stop trying to mind manipulate or literally brainwash us all and do the right thing, take care of those in need, stand up to and surround evil instead of desperately trying to cling to and manipulate the masses for power, wealth, and prestige then our planet and our collective way of life would become sustainable and peaceful.

Dangerous ideas I know but our species either survives or self destructs and goes extinct on the very core of their existence and manifestation.

Mitt Romney likes to talk a lot about “love of country” with his best choir boy face so lets add up this “love” that Willard claims to have:

“Love of Country” – I guess that means being a tax dodger is loving your Country, telling people in a disaster area you are on your own, is love of Country, firing tax payers from profitable companies to make more money with slave labor overseas…vulture capitalism that’s gotta be love for your Country, slashing medicaid by 30%, slashing education investment, ending healthcare for all, that’s real love for your Country, firing Big Bird, that’s a lot of love for your Country, investing in short sales betting on companies to go broke, that’s a lot of love for your Country, getting rid of the Consumer Protection Agency, denying equal pay for women, actively denying an equal vote for minorities, that’s real love for your Country, tying your dog to the roof of your car and driving 650 miles into the cold north at 70 miles an hour well that’s just a lot of love.

Sell it somewhere else “Willard” We The People aren’t buying it.

If the republicans, any republicans remain in congress, the house of representatives and the senate and if they win the executive branch as well this is what it will mean; your wages will go lower, unions will be outlawed, your healthcare expenses will go up, we will start a war with Iran, we’ll venture into Syria, medicare costs will go up for your parents and grand parents, they will privatize the social security insurance and charge you brokerage fees, our schools will crumble even farther, good jobs will go unfulfilled, manufacturing will be moved overseas, our billion dollar tourist industries along the coast will be ruined, small businesses will be crushed by Staples and Wallmart, the polar bears will go extinct, the wolves will be all slaughtered, they will bring back derivatives, deregulate wall street, abolish the Consumer Protection Agency, outlaw class action law suits, pollute our land, water, air and pass the cost to clean it up onto the tax payer, contaminate our food with pesticides, give us more cancer and charge us more to cure it, strap the small farmer, prevent you from voting, prevent you from protesting within ear shot or view, ignore your petitions, calls and letters, bring back styrofoam and plastic bags, sell off our public lands to private monopolies, outlaw contraception, and ask you for your “papers” while you are out for a stroll.

Everybody wants to make a quick buck and I understand that but I suggest that the power brokers take a look at the sky at night.  This planet is separated from an airless, dead, cold universe by a whisper thin layer of oxygen that keeps us all alive.  No amount of money can replace the natural resources we aim smokestacks at day after day, year after year pumping into it tons of pollutants.  It’s maddengliy stupid to massively destroy the environment that sustains our very being for business as usual.

Man made chemicals like paint thinner are stripping away the natural atmosphere, water and food chain from the abundant planet we found ourselves born into changing and infiltrating a life supporting system into a desolate waste land.  No amount of money can replace the ecological system we depend on for our very survival.  Clean air, clean water and a clean food chain is more important second to none for survival on this planet more so than profit, borders or religion.

But everybody thinks I’ll make this last one deal and it will be okay.  I’ll tear down this one last mountain and it will be okay.  I’ll fracture this one last part of the crust and it will be okay.  I’ll destroy this one last head water system and stream and it will be okay.  I’ll spill this one last billion of barrels of oil and it will be okay.  I’ll launch this one last rocket and it will be okay.  I’ll fight this one last war and it will be okay.  I’ll spread this one last pesticide and it will be okay.  WRONG!

You can not take care of the future if don’t take care of the present.  It’s never the future.  Its always TODAY.  You make the changes needed TODAY and that’s how the future is made.

Today gentlemen…!

The Earth Orbit

Our Earth is a living breathing organism not a dead rock that we just happen to be on.  Humans are a part of the natural process just as plugged in as the ocean breezes and the passing clouds.  We have evolved out of that natural process you see before you.  Every decisions we make whether its tossing a cigarette butt on the ground or ignoring industrial/commercial pollution degrades that system and degrades us.  Every breath you take is like that planet spinning you see before you.
Let’s look at some hindsight and look at 100 years ago or even 50 years ago.  Heck I remember the 1970’s Outer Banks and looking back well the growth has been enormous.  Have you tried getting over that bridge on a Friday?  And hurricanes keep wiping highway 12 out maybe that should give everyone pause to think about where we live.   At some point we have to self regulate and understand we need the environment more than it needs us.  And that we need the real outer banks the natural outer banks to grow, thrive and flourish.

Long line fishing, herbicide and oil run off we pollute and deplete the very thing that sustains us but you can’t eat money.  If you are going to buy into the market system and not be a subsistence farmer/fisherman then you have to adapt to the boom and bust cycle of the market place and mom and pops go in and out of business.

Better regulation would smooth the transition for the mom and pops affected by environmental foresight.  But real bullies controlling Capitol Hill don’t value helping anybody but themselves.  Face it we are all sort of like that.  But if you care about the mom and pops that go out of business as we recalibrate our awareness as to the necessity of sustainability and a healthy environment then vote democrat across the board no matter where you live.  That way the mom and pops can get the assistance they need to transition to a new plan, further education or skill training.  The powers that be helped transition Goldman Sachs and AIG but they don’t have dime one to spare for the bait shop owner.  Those are your bullies.

Do you know how many career changes the average person goes through in current economic system?  Ten!  That a mom and pop has hung on for decades perhaps over expanding, perhaps never changing their business model, perhaps not even having a plan other than hanging a shingle out while the outer banks explodes with development isn’t much of a sob story admittedly especially in the face of the greater global good.  But I am sorry for them and that their world has been encroached upon – really I am – who wouldn’t want to have a little bait shop that earned you 100K clear?  Maybe the mom and pops should try kayak tours, real estate, insurance or get a medical degree?

Environmentalists think long term and big picture they aren’t bullies or zealots they are people who care and have the foresight to worry about long term sustainability over development.  The environment that feeds us and keeps us healthy is an intricate design each part of it working in harmony to grow but in walks man clear cutting it all to pieces as fast as he can for short term profit and cheap thrills.

Without governance seeing the big picture and managing the markets we would all be the victims of self immolation except there wouldn’t be any point to it other than sheer stupidity, shortsightedness, and greed.

If I was on City Council down in the Outer Banks I would be in favor of preserving the environment and long term sustainability – would request federal funds since that stance is in everyone’s best interest, and help those 20 odd businesses currently affected by new environmental regulations transition to a new line of work, and or relocation.

In order to sustain the growth in human population 7 billion and counting we need to sustain and enable the growth in the natural world that actually feeds us and drives or economic machine.

Being able to four wheel around now off line beach areas burning fossil fuel for kicks or being able to carry everything in your garage to the beach would not and should not be a governmental concern.

That all may be fun and convenient and direct a few dollars in a certain way but we can no longer ignore or be lackadaisical about our hugely negative impact on our environment, health and well being.  Natural resources are the building blocks of – everything – in the market place.  We need to grow, preserve and protect our natural resources through time tested natural processes at a much greater rate then we are depleting them.

Profit, Taxes, Warren Buffet, and The Global Survival of Mankind

The idea that profit is the end all be all number one priority misses the mark by a landslide. Profit has to come down on the list of priorities to number five somewhere below sustainability (yes the environment) health, education and security. We need sustainability to live on this our one and only planet everything else comes second, and therefore manage our resources in a sustainable fashion. Clear cutting, slash and burn short term profit making is good when it’s pet rocks but devastating when it is the actual environment, food chain/food source, that sustains us. That being said money is a tool not a lover or friend or companion or neighbor, or something that fulfills us. That void inside you if it exists can not be filled up with money. Helping one another is the only way to fill that void no amount of booze or broads, good score cards, seats, or wide screen televisions or fine cigars or country club memberships or visits with celebrities will achieve that goal. So as to why we are here that should be obvious by anyone past 50 years old – to help each other.

In order to foster a more equitable society we need to quite frankly spread the wealth. If the wealth is concentrated in a few hands you will have war, and civil unrest. An uneducated population is treacherous. The war in the mid east is the haves versus the have nots – who else would be willing to blow themselves up unless they felt what’s the difference my existence is subhuman anyway.

The estate tax and Buffet’s opinion about it speak directly to those concerns. Those manipulating the tax code behind the veil of the beltway do so at their own demise, miss the big picture, are looking for short term gains and forget who and where they are.
